The third CD from Beyond the Pale, POSTCARDS features the band at a creative peak in this sophisticated collection of North American-inflected, east-European roots fusion. Traversing a vast and exotic musical landscape, POSTCARDS moves seamlessly from raucous dance rhythms and funky acoustic grooves to complex instrumental showpieces and chamber-music like aesthetics. Shaped by many musical traditions but bound by none, POSTCARDS is a stunning redefinition of contemporary Klezmer and east European folk/roots music. Feature guest vocalist Vira Lozinsky (Isreal) on premiere arrangements of new Yiddish songs set to timeless Roma melodies.

Winner “Best CD of 2009 – multi-genre category” Indie Acoustic Project

2010 Canadian Folk Music Award winner for Instrumental Group of the Year, and Pushing the Boundaries. Also nominated for Ensemble of the Year and World Music Group of the Year.

Beyond the Pale’s debut CD “Routes” is an exciting set of 12 recordings that will surprise and delight. The originals recorded here range from rousing klezmer- and Roumanian-influenced compositions (“Icebreaker,” “Agnia,” “Grebenyas,” “Sirbish”) to more daring hybrids touching on reggae (“ChasenJah”), roots music (“Eavesdropping”), Balkan music (“Bulcharescu”), and high-powered acoustic funk (“Gyration”). In their unique interpretations of Yiddish vocal music the group has unearthed some little-known gems (“Vander Ich Mir Lustig,” “Vodka”), recorded here for the first time by a contemporary klezmer ensemble and delivered with humour and poignance. Even in their more orthodox moments (“Roumanian Fantasy,” “Doina and Honga”) the group punctuates their deep understanding of the elegance and mystery in traditional klezmer melodies with a refined sense of their own musical identity. Destined to become a classic of the revival and continuing evolution of klezmer music, Beyond the Pale’s Routes heralds the arrival of a significant new presence in the Canadian klezmer, folk and world music scenes. Produced by multi-Juno winner Danny Greenspoon, and including special guests Dave Wall (vocals), Rick Lazar (percussion), Josh Engel (guitar), and Dan Goldman (guitar).
